A landscape concept for a large residential development in Digbeth, Birmingham.
A concept of marsh gardens reimagined the presence of water at the site to create tranquil spaces for residents and public visitors. Ideas developed from the past stamping and piercing works; cardboard box factory; thimble works; slate and stone yards and the wetland ‘dyke-path’ once present in Digbeth. What resulted was a series of enclosed box-like spaces, surrounded by planted spaces punched down into existing levels. These would take on excess surface rainwater at different depths and capacities. Punched and stamped metal work detailing by local artist Anna Lorenz seemed a perfect addition to the design to create intrigue into the area’s past.
