Technical design with Define Planning and Design
[2025]
A landscape concept for a large residential development in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Currently in technical design stage.
Many companies previously occupied the site, but Isherwood Sutcliffe’s remnant ghost sign of varnishing and japanning initially captured the imagination. His grave in nearby Warstone Cemetery is a strange Victorian tree-stump monument with climbing ivy and ferns.
This became an influence for a softer shaded landscape of woodland pathways that meander over existing complex levels. Clearings or glades became cracked courtyard surfaces - influenced by the craquelure in an Isherwood japanned tray.
The aim was to recreate lost habitats with a hint of a Victorian magic, whilst past industries in and around the site are reflected in colours, materials, planting, furniture elements and artwork integration.
I initially developed the vision and concept and operated as a design consultant for Define who were appointed to undertake technical design.
